Guana Friday and Mill Cove Saturday

UNREAD_POSTby Redfish Chaser » Sun Dec 18, 2011 11:09 pm

Got off work early Friday and ran down to Guana, launching about 3pm. Water was smooth so I threw topwater with no success (I need some lessons from Harley!). Peddled north about a mile and ran into a school of reds that were ravenous. Threw a spinner-bait with a gulp and hooked up on the first cast. Left the red in my net and cast out again, hooked up and lost him half way to the yak when the spinner-bait broke. Grabbed another pole with a jig/grub and caught/released 2 more before losing the school. Caught a trout on the way back in but could not scare up a flounder.

Hit Mill Cove Saturday 9am and worked the docks/oyster beds heading towards downtown and caught 2 reds on dead shrimp (I really wanted to catch a drum). Saw all of the yaks off in the distance and peddled over to see Jim, Charlie and some other guys (I gave Charlie a demo on leaning into tight turns). Worked back around the islands, caught some dink trout and cut my day short to get back as my daughter and wife were home doing the Christmas cookie & cake baking :D

Good to see you out there Craig. The black drum would not eat my shrimp on this day, but I caught some nice ones on my last two recent trips to Simpsons.

Top Water:
According to my photo archives, this is the exact time of the year I've caught BIG reds (some over 30") on topwater down in St Aug & Flagler. Some of them actually bent my treble hooks straight, so I replaced all the hooks on my favorite top water lures with stronger ones. I haven't seen the big ones yet, but I'll be going again this weekend to see if they're there. So, don't put away the top water lures, yet!
